This spring we decided to hatch some baby chicks. My parents did this a few times for us when I was growing up, and we always loved it. We were excited to help our girls experience watching these little guys hatch, and having pets of sorts for a while. We bought an incubator and some fertilized eggs from a local farm. After 21 days of turning them carefully three times per day, they hatched! It was incredibly exciting and I think the girls favorite part was probably hearing the chickies tweeting from inside the eggs.
Now they go over to this AWESOME brooder that J made about a million times a day to check on our chicks. Out of an original 12 eggs, we had 10 develop and 10 hatch, and 7 chickens now living. It was a little stressful having 3 die within the first few days, but after a few rough moments Little H took it pretty well.
The farmer we bought the eggs from was nice enough to give us a good variety of types, so we have all kinds of chickens. The two black ones are Jack and Esa (don't tell Little H that I have NO idea which is which). The yellow ones are Charlie, Daisy and Sunshine. The gray one is Roxy and the brown striped one is Princess Peep. And yes, the chicken with the girliest name of all is most likely a rooster. We gently hinted that maybe we should change his name, but Little H would have none of that. Princess Peep it is.
